Method note

How to use the Mines calculator

  1. Choose how many mines are on the board, from 1 to 24.
  2. Enter how many safe tiles you plan to open before you cash out.
  3. Enter the house edge from the game information panel and your bet.

Example

With 3 mines and 5 safe picks, the win chance is 49.57%. At a 1% house edge, the multiplier is 1.9974×, so a $10 bet pays $19.97 if all five picks are safe.

Why more picks cost more

Every safe pick removes a safe tile from the board. The next pick therefore has a higher chance to hit a mine. The multiplier rises to match the lower chance. When the house edge is the same on every board, no mine count or pick count gives a better expected return.

Questions

Common questions

How are the odds in Stake Mines calculated?

The board has 25 tiles. With m mines, the chance that k picks are all safe is C(25 − m, k) ÷ C(25, k). Each safe pick leaves one tile fewer, so the chance falls faster with every pick.

How is the Mines multiplier calculated?

The fair multiplier is 1 ÷ win chance. The game then keeps its house edge, so the multiplier is (1 − house edge) ÷ win chance. Enter the house edge that the game information panel shows.

What is the highest Mines multiplier?

The lowest win chance on a 25-tile board is 12 mines and 13 safe picks: 1 in 5,200,300. At a 1% house edge, the multiplier for that board is 5,148,297×.

Is there a winning strategy for Mines?

No. When the house edge is the same for every board, more mines raise the multiplier and lower the win chance by the same ratio. The expected return stays the same.

Does the calculator work for Stake.us Mines?

The board maths is the same for any 25-tile Mines game. Use the house edge that the game shows on the site you play.
